Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
