Entire Career of Salary Insufficient for UK Employees to Join Wealthiest 10%, Study Reveals

Per recent research, the median earner in the UK would have to work half a century of earnings to attain the wealth level of the most affluent 10% in the country.

Growing Economic Disparity Through the Years

This research reviewed financial assets data from the Covid pandemic period and discovered that in 2006-08, it would have needed nearly four decades of average worker salary to enter the richest segment of the financial hierarchy.

A senior economist involved with the study stated: "Wealth gaps in Britain are now so large that a typical full-time employee saving all their earnings during their working years would continue to be incapable to achieve the peak of the economic scale."

Assessing the Financial Disparity

The research discovered that the disparity between the wealth of the average person and an individual in the wealthiest decile was one million pounds in the pre-crisis period, but had widened to £1.3m in real terms by 2020-22.

The researcher continued: "These gaps are doubly concerning as financial progression in Britain is low – people that start life well-off tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Despite the economic divide growing in actual numbers, the portion of total wealth in the UK held by the richest households – known as "proportional economic disparity" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s era," according to the study.

During this period, complete net worth in the UK surged from triple the gross domestic product, to nearly seven and a half times.

Factors of Wealth Inequality

Referred to as "automatic" increases, by means of increasing property values and variations in retirement fund assessments, were the key contributors of the growing financial disparity from 2010 onward, per the study.

These gains typically went to older, property-owning households, the research shows – intensifying the intergenerational wealth divide.

Generational Economic Gaps

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and those in their early 60s increased over twofold in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to £310,000.

Area-Based Differences

Furthermore, the study revealed stark regional variations, with the typical amount of net worth in 2020-22 reaching £290,000 in the SE of England, where housing costs have typically increased quickly, as opposed to £110,000 in the northeastern region.

Pandemic Period Impact

Throughout the COVID period, when numerous employees were supported by the government-supported job retention program, and Covid shutdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the information reveals many households were in a position to set aside money, increasing their wealth.

More affluent homes fared much better, nevertheless. "The typical family in the poorest fifth saw their available funds increase by just £80 over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), broadly the same as the two years pre-pandemic. On the other hand, the average household in the highest income quintile saw their cash reserves rise by £4,200," the report finds.
