Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The ex-president was found guilty of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of the former president's transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a statement said.
The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brasília.
The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
