The artist has handed over the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which operates to save the United Kingdom's grassroots concert spaces.

Fender was given the cheque on October 16 as his third album the album was declared the best record of the previous year.

He has chosen to give the cash to the trust, in acknowledgment of the essential function small stages had in his initial steps.

"I couldn't be pursuing this success if it wasn't for all the gigs I did around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," said Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these venues have shut down – approximately one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, major artists including the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to help venues survive, by applying a small levy to their admission fees, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

He also took part, raising more than £100,000 on his live tour to help thirty-eight grassroots venues across the UK.

These funds helped venues that were dealing with possible closure due to challenges caused by flooding, fires and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, court cases and neighbor objections.

Other venues received funding support in modernizing facilities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted performers and audiences.

"The notion that revenue from concerts in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has commented.

Fender is far from the only musician to donate his honor prize money to worthy causes.

In Pulp received the trophy in the mid-90s for their record the album, lead singer Cocker stated that the group would contribute their cash to the organization the charity.

In 2002, artist she shared her prize across a few charities, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also gave a grand to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they required new equipment," Ms Dynamite explained to the media.

Two years ago, they gave their winnings to the local youth club that nurtured their group, in addition to other local music groups.

Additionally the 1994 recipients M People donated their prize to a MS organization after a friend was diagnosed the condition.

"Winning was ample," remarked singer Heather Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our success impacted the lives of others."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had saved a couple of local spots in the South East, by bringing them into local control.

The Joiners in the city and the other in Bristol were acquired under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is supported by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "stakes" in the buildings.
