Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
