Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
